Quickfire Combo-Reviews: "Deadpool" #17 / "Action Comics" #962 / "Detective Comics" #939

"Deadpool" #17: To sell this as a "Civil War II" tie-in is simply ridiculous, as it has simply no connection whatsoever to Marvel's big summer event (a fact even admitted by Duggan in the comic's intro page). Apart from that? Nothing to report, just the same old Deadpool shtick. This series needs some fresh new ideas, and the Mercs for Money should stick to their own series.

"Action Comics" #962: The Doomsday storyline is over (for now), and the series closes it in solid but unspectacular fashion. Kudos to Jurgens though for gradually developing and shaping the comic's characters.

"Detective Comics" #939: Admittedly, the series started out quite slow, but by now has come full circle in terms of drama, dynamic and great action set pieces. Can't wait for the conclusion.

Quickfire Combo-Reviews: "The Hunt" #1 & #2 / "Black Widow" #6

"The Hunt" #1 & #2: It certainly looks the part, but even for someone who gets startled rather easily, this didn't do much in terms of scares or convincing atmosphere. Well established tropes en masse, and the decision to actually write out the Irish accent proves to be a doubtful one.

5/10

"Black Widow" #6: Even though the hinted at showdown with Iron Man did not really happen, and the revelation of the Weeping Lion is slightly disappointing, this still fully convinces with its spectacularly paced storytelling and breathtaking art style.

Quickfire Combo-Reviews: "Green Arrow" #4 / "Deadpool v Gambit" #3 / "Deadpool" #16

"Green Arrow" #4: It's fast, light and fun, with Percy knowing not to overemphasize Oliver Queen's personal drama; and the art here is simply spectacular, as Ferreyra's makes every panel look like a small portrait.

7/10

"Deadpool v Gambit" #3: It has one of the funniest fighting scenes you probably have read in a while, but unfortunately Acker and Blacker lose more and more control of the story they're telling, resulting in an utter narrative chaos.

5/10

"Deadpool" #16: It's campfire story time, as Solo recalls how he dressed up as Deadpool once. It's good fun, but also anybody's guess why this gets marketed as a "Civil War II" tie-in.

Keepin' It 360: "Star Wars: Darth Vader" #21

Darth Vader #19 is far away from the lows it reached several months ago, but especially with the series' end looming on the horizon, neither the team around writer Kieron Gillen nor editors seem to care much about it any more (the scary number of typos tells a lot). No glaring issues, just the same story and aesthetics all over again. Only for hardcore fans.

Review: "Green Lanterns: Rebirth" #1

Sadly, Green Lanterns: Rebirth doesn't do particularly much to keep its readers invested, even though protagonists Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz are wonderfully complex characters, whose back stories are signified by loss and perseverance in the face of public and private adversity.

Writers Johns and Humphries, however, don't explore this intriguing potential enough here, but focus half the comic on their uninspired banter and quarrels, before Hal Jordan makes them team up to defend earth. Think of him as some sort of cosmic Edward James Olmos in a buddy cop comic story that you shouldn't already give up on now, but that needs to figure out what it really wants to be and where its strengths ultimately lie.
